- File Transfer Help
-
- ==============================================================
-
- Okay... This is the hardest part. If you can get suitcases and AFM files
- from the Macintosh to your Amiga then you're laughin'...
-
- METHODS OF TRANSFER:
-
- 1) Modem. Simple but effective. OK, not so simple. But still effective. If
- you are not versed in telecommunications, skip to the next part.
-
- We can use simple terminal programs on each end with some kind of standard
- file transfer protocol (XMODEM, etc.) but remember: Fonts should be transfered
- using MacBinary XMODEM or MacBinary ZMODEM or MacBinary whatever. This is
- selectable on the Macintosh end. .AFM files (which are really text files)
- should be transfered as PURE (no translation) or TEXT (simple text
- translation) files.
-
- We can make archives before transfer, of course. Does LHArc exist for the
- Macintosh? If not, try StuffIt. StuffIt (Raymond Lau, Shareware) is a
- Macintosh file archiver that makes .SIT archives. This is what UnStuffIt
- is used for: to un-archive files archived with StuffIt on the Mac. The
- syntax is simple:
-
- 1.SYS:> UnStuffIt options archivename.SIT
-
- The options are:
-
- l: View contents
- v: View with file dates
- x: Extract all files
-
- VERY IMPORTANT UNSTUFFIT NOTES: .SIT archives MUST be transfered in
- MacBinary format like fonts are supposed to be. And like the docs for UnSIT
- say: RLE decompression doesn't work! Unfortunately, this means you'll have
- to disable compression altogether when making the .SIT archive. This is the
- only way to ensure reliable transfer (I had some bug reports from this
- thing; AFMs for mono-spaced typefaces were really trashed unless compression
- was disabled.)
-
- 2) Disk transfer. If you own Mac-2-DOS (CCS) or A-MAX II (ReadySoft) and
- have a Macintosh 800K disk drive, you can read Mac disks and copy the files
- to Amiga disks easily. The same translation rules apply as for modem
- transfer: Use MacBinary for .SIT archives or font suitcases, and TEXT for
- AFM files. Refer to the docs for A-MAX or Mac-2-DOS for the details.
-
- 3) Disk transfer through MS-DOS. Yes, Macintosh machines can read and write
- MS-DOS disks (At least the current ones can.) And if you have CrossDOS
- (Consultron) or MessyDOS (Olaf Seibert, Public Domain) you can of course
- read the same disks.
-
- A recent tidbit available on the Mac is a DOS Mounter; an INIT that lets a
- Mac with a FDHD drive read MS-DOS disks from the Macintosh desktop or any
- Mac application. If you have access to a Mac like this, simply copy the
- suitcases, AFMs, or .SIT archives to an MS-DOS disk and read them on your
- Amiga through CrossDOS or MessyDOS.
-
- Hope that helped somewhat.
